§ 12-9. Prohibited signs.

Prohibited signs (see definition of "sign" in section 12-2) include but are not limited to:

a.

Any sign, by reason of form, character, or shape, which may confuse or dangerously distract the attention of the operator of a motor vehicle or interfere with the purpose of any traffic control signal or directional device.

b.

Signs which in any way simulate official, directional, or warning signs erected or maintained by the state or county or public utility or similar agency concerned with the protection of the public health or safety.

c.

Signs with any lighting or control mechanism which may cause radio or television interference.

d.

Roof signs, where the sign is mounted on the roof of a building. Signs that are located on the gable end or parapet shall not be considered roof signs.

e.

Off-premises signs, except as allowed by this article.

f.

Signs with moving, revolving, or rotating parts, optical illusions of movement, mechanical movement of any description, or other apparent movement achieved by electrical, electronic, mechanical, or natural means.

g.

Flashing signs. Signs with lights which flash, move, rotate, blink, flicker, or vary in either intensity or color are prohibited.

h.

Tracker lights. Rotating beacon lights or search lights that aim at the sky are prohibited.

i.

Signs consisting of pennants, banners, streamers, spinners, strings of light bulbs, or other fluttering, spinning, or similar type signs.

j.

Banner signs and vinyl grade banner materials, other than temporary signs permissible in section 12-8 of this article.

k.

Moored balloons or other floating signs that are tethered to a structure or the ground.

l.

Signs containing any lewd, obscene, or profane material, or any unlawful wording or material, and signs inciting, encouraging, or offering any unlawful activity.

m.

Electronic display signs, except as allowed by section 12-7(6).
