§ 14.5-4. Size and location for display of street address numbers.

  • Notwithstanding any provisions of section 14.5-2, all current street address numbers shall be displayed as follows:

    (a)

    Street address numbers for residences shall not be less than three (3) inches in height and shall be made of durable and clearly visible material. The numbers shall be conspicuously placed on, above, or at the side of the main entrance so that the number is discernible from the street. Whenever a building is more than fifty (50) feet from the street, or when the main building entrance is not visible from the street, the number shall be placed along a walk, driveway, or at another suitable location so that the address number is clearly visible from the street.

    (b)

    Street address numbers for commercial, industrial, and other non residential buildings or structures shall not be less than three (3) inches in height and shall be made of durable and clearly visible material. The numbers shall be conspicuously placed on, above, or at the side of the main entrance so that the number is discernible from the street. There shall be no other wording or numbering within two (2) feet of the building number. Whenever a commercial building or structure is more than fifty (50) feet from the street, or when the main building entrance is not visible from the street, the number shall be placed along a walk, driveway, or at another suitable location so that the address number is clearly visible from the street.

    Whenever commercial or industrial signage is installed or replaced, the assigned street number shall be not less than four (4) inches in height and shall be affixed to the top or bottom center of the sign or included at one (1) of those locations within the sign face. The area of such sign devoted to displaying the street address number of the size required by this chapter shall not be included in determining the sign area for compliance with other regulatory requirements.

    (c)

    Apartments, townhouses, shopping centers, or other similar groupings where only one (1) number is assigned shall display such number at the main entranceway. Said address numbers shall have a minimum height of three (3) inches. The provisions of subsection (b) above related to the placement of street address numbers on commercial and industrial structures and signage shall apply mutatis mutandis. Numbers for the individual units or establishments within the complex shall be displayed on, above, or to the side of the main doorway of each unit or establishment.

    (d)

    Street address numbers or letters shall be of a contrasting color to the background on which they are mounted.
